ALCOHOLS

Alcohols are a group of organic compounds (like alkanes)

They are like alkanes where one H atom has been replaced by an OH (called a hydroxyl)

Notice how the OH is actually an O and H atom bonded together

The only 2 alcohols you need to know are the first 2; methanol and ethanol

PROPERTIES OF ALCOHOLS

1) SOLUBILITY

Both methanol and ethanol are soluble in water, the explanation for this can be found here but you do not need to be able to explain this. Alcohols are said to be miscible in water

2) STATEMethanol and ethanol are both liquids at room temperature

3) BOILING POINTS

ALCOHOL

BOILING POINT (degrees C)

Methanol

64.7

Ethanol

78.3

The same trend is observed as for alkanes, as the molecule gets bigger the boiling point gets higher
